Smallfry Wines is a result of the passion of all things vinous of Wayne Ahrens and partner Suzi Hilder. Wayne is a fifth-generation Barossan; Suzi is the daughter of Upper Hunter viticulturist Richard Hilder and wife Del (of Pyramid Hill Wines).
Wayne and Suzi both have CSU degrees. Suzi was a senior viticulturist for Foster's, and Wayne's track record includes seven vintages as a cellar hand at Orlando Wyndham and other smaller Barossa wineries. They have a 10-ha vineyard in the Eden Valley (predominantly cabernet sauvignon and riesling), and a long-established 17-ha vineyard in the Vine Vale subregion of the Barossa Valley has no less than 16 varieties (shiraz, grenache, semillon, mourvedre, cabernet sauvignon and riesling). Most of the grapes are sold to other Barossa wineries but certain amounts are kept to create the Smallfry range. Smallfry was established in 2005 and produces 1800 cases per year.
